Role Description
The Mechanical Designer / Structural Designer is responsible for developing technical drawings, preparing design layouts, and producing detailed engineering documentation for mechanical components, structural systems, and related projects. This role combines computer-aided design, technical drafting, design analysis, material selection, and engineering coordination to ensure that design solutions meet project specifications, functional requirements, and applicable technical standards.
Mechanical design responsibilities include creating and modifying mechanical drawings, component layouts, assembly diagrams, and manufacturing documentation. The designer interprets engineering specifications, design briefs, and technical requirements to develop accurate and practical mechanical solutions. Duties include preparing 2D drawings and 3D models, selecting suitable materials and components, reviewing dimensions and tolerances, and updating design files according to project changes. The role also supports the development of equipment layouts, mechanical assemblies, and component configurations while considering functionality, manufacturability, maintenance requirements, and efficient material usage.
Structural design responsibilities involve preparing structural drawings, layouts, connection details, and technical documentation for building frameworks, support systems, and other structural elements. The designer interprets architectural drawings, engineering calculations, design specifications, and project requirements to develop coordinated structural details. Duties include producing plans, elevations, sections, reinforcement details, and fabrication drawings where applicable. The role also supports the selection and representation of structural materials, coordinates dimensions and connection arrangements, and ensures that drawings align with approved engineering designs and relevant technical standards.
Design documentation responsibilities include maintaining drawing registers, organizing project files, updating revisions, and ensuring that all design documents follow established naming conventions and quality control procedures. The designer coordinates with engineers, architects, project managers, manufacturers, and construction teams to clarify design requirements and resolve technical discrepancies. Additional duties include reviewing drawings for consistency, incorporating feedback, preparing material schedules, supporting design reviews, and ensuring that updated documents are distributed to relevant stakeholders.
The position contributes to design development from initial concepts through detailed documentation and project implementation. The designer helps identify potential design conflicts, improve drawing accuracy, and streamline design workflows through effective coordination and the use of appropriate software tools. By producing precise technical drawings, maintaining organized documentation, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, the role supports design quality, technical consistency, efficient project execution, and compliance with applicable engineering requirements.
