We are looking for a Route Planner / Vehicle Controller to join our Command & Control Centre and support the efficient management and monitoring of vehicle operations through route planning, GPS tracking, fleet monitoring, and operational coordination.
Role Overview:
The Route Planner / Vehicle Controller will be responsible for planning, monitoring, and controlling vehicle routes to ensure efficient daily operations and compliance with assigned service areas and schedules.
The role will operate as part of the Command & Control Centre, providing real-time support through GPS and fleet tracking systems, identifying deviations and operational issues, coordinating with field teams, and supporting vehicle reallocation when required.
The position will also be responsible for following up on the installation, replacement, maintenance, and operational performance of GPS tracking systems across the fleet. The successful candidate should have strong analytical and coordination skills, practical knowledge of GIS and GPS technologies, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced operational environment.
Key Responsibilities
Route Planning & Vehicle Monitoring
Plan and optimize daily vehicle routes in coordination with Operations and service requirements.
Monitor vehicle movements and route adherence through GPS and fleet tracking systems.
Ensure vehicles operate according to approved routes, assigned areas, schedules, and operational plans.
Track vehicle locations and service progress in real time through the Command & Control Centre.
Identify route deviations, delays, missed areas, unauthorized stops, extended stoppages, and other operational irregularities.
Review planned versus actual vehicle movements, trips, routes, and service coverage.
Support the reallocation or rerouting of vehicles in response to operational requirements, breakdowns, delays, or changes in service demand.
Ensure route plans are practical and aligned with actual field conditions and operational constraints.
GIS, GPS & Route Optimization
Utilize GIS, GPS, digital mapping, and fleet tracking systems to develop, monitor, and improve vehicle routes.
Analyze maps, service areas, vehicle movements, and route data to identify opportunities for operational improvement.
Coordinate with relevant teams to update route plans based on changes in service areas, operational requirements, or field conditions.
Conduct field/site visits when required to assess road conditions, service areas, access limitations, collection points, and other operational factors affecting route planning.
Validate planned routes against actual site conditions and recommend appropriate adjustments in coordination with Operations.
GPS Installation & Maintenance Coordination
Follow up on GPS tracking system installations across vehicles and ensure required devices are installed and operational.
Coordinate GPS device replacements, troubleshooting, maintenance, and related technical requirements.
Maintain accurate records of GPS devices, installations, replacements, maintenance activities, and outstanding issues.
Coordinate with internal technical teams and external service providers to resolve GPS-related issues within the required timelines.
Monitor GPS system functionality and promptly escalate recurring or critical technical issues.
Command & Control Centre Operations
Support daily Command & Control Centre activities through continuous monitoring of fleet movements and operational performance.
Coordinate with Area Managers, Supervisors, Operations teams, drivers, and other relevant stakeholders to resolve real-time operational issues.
Maintain clear and timely communication with field teams regarding route deviations, vehicle availability, service delays, and other operational matters.
Support investigations relating to vehicle movements, operational incidents, service complaints, and route deviations.
Maintain accurate logs and records of operational events, vehicle movements, deviations, incidents, and corrective actions.
Escalate critical operational issues to the relevant management team in accordance with established procedures.
Respond quickly to operational requirements while maintaining accuracy and effective documentation.
What We’re Looking For
Strong practical understanding of vehicle operations, fleet monitoring, route planning, GPS tracking, and GIS-based mapping.
Ability to interpret maps, routes, service areas, and real-time vehicle movements accurately.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify operational issues and recommend practical solutions.
Excellent coordination and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with drivers, supervisors, Area Managers, Operations teams, and service providers.
Good attention to detail with a structured approach to monitoring, reporting, and documentation.
Ability to work effectively under pressure and respond quickly to real-time operational requirements.
Flexible and adaptable approach, with the ability to support responsibilities beyond the core role when required by the Command & Control Centre.
Comfortable working in both control room and field environments.
Ability to maintain accuracy and professional judgement while managing multiple operational requirements simultaneously.
Educational Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Information Technology, GIS, Geomatics, Logistics, Transportation, or a related discipline.
Good command of written and spoken English.
Practical knowledge of GIS, GPS/Fleet Tracking Systems, digital mapping, and route planning.
Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Microsoft Excel, and operational reporting tools.
Practical knowledge of vehicles and fleet operations.
Additional certification or training in GIS, fleet management, logistics, transportation, or related systems will be an advantage.
Experience
Minimum 5 years of relevant practical experience in route planning, fleet control, GIS/GPS operations, vehicle monitoring, transportation, logistics, or a similar operational environment.
Practical experience in GIS and GPS/Fleet Tracking Systems is required.
Experience in fleet management, transportation, waste management, facilities management, logistics, or other large-scale operational environments is preferred.
Experience working in a Control Room, Command & Control Centre, Fleet Operations Centre, Transport Control Centre, or similar environment will be an advantage.
Experience with real-time vehicle monitoring, route optimization, operational reporting, and incident tracking is preferred.
